In the end, if you have a good one, no amount of effort and hours spent on your application will be enough to win you an interview.Even though I am a career coach, I am not an employment lawyer. I can only tell you what my experience is as a job applicant, and what I've seen from my clients.I personally look for about three job applicant essays that are free. The three essays I recommend are samples from a college, federal agency, or other private organization. It can be free. Heck, you may even find that there are free samples.When I started coaching college students for hire, I found that most college students were sending resumes that were full of their favorite academic topics. They would also include an essay. This wasn't good. The essay didn't do anything to show employers anything about them.A sample background essay is much more effective. There is nothing wrong with including personal information in a resume.But it's not going to be effective if the writer's experience doesn't line up with what you're applying for. As a matter of fact, it will show the employer that you aren't at ease talking about yourself.Show employers you're interested in what they're saying. Use your skills as a listener, not as a participant. Do this on your own time, don't use time by asking a friend to proofread your resume.At the end of the day, get an essay. You need to finish the job.
